Dear Ms. Hollingsworth
I’m proud that The Academy of American Poets recognized this poem with an Honorable Mention for the 1999 Virginia R. Walter Prize at The University of Georgia, and even more proud that it was selected for that honor by the late Dr. Hugh Kenner. Dr. Kenner is considered among the foremost critics of Modernist literature and I had the pleasure of studying Yeats for an entire semester under his sage tutelage.
First Sonnet
I’m seldom satisfied with my attempts at formal verse but this piece is one of my favorites, perhaps because it consciously balances its formal sensibilities with an informal theme.
